Flower Shirvan Kit
Size: 6½" x 4¼"
Complete kit for the experienced needleworker to produce a 1/12th scale miniature version in needlepoint of an authentic oriental carpet. The kit contains a pattern chart with information about the origins of the carpet, fully illustrated instructions, 22-holes-to-the-inch bound canvas, Appleton's crewel wool, perle cotton for the fringe and a tapestry needle.
The original carpet on which this miniature version is based comes from Shirvan, one of the principle waeving areas of the Caucasus region, in present-day Azerbaijan. This carpet, dated 1875, belongs to a group known as 'Flower Shirvan', which have large star-like polychrome flowers, arranged chromatically in diagonal rows on a dark blue ground. This particular example, with its borders of Kufic script, is very similar ot one in the Metropolitan Museum, New York.
