Complete kit for the experienced needleworker to produce a 1/12th scale miniature version in needlepoint of an authentic oriental carpet. The kit contains a pattern chart with information about the origins of the carpet, fully illustrated instructions, 22-holes-to-the-inch bound canvas, Appleton's crewel wool, perle cotton for the fringe and a tapestry needle.
The original carpet on which this miniature version is based is in the Museum of Islamic Art, Berlin. It comes from the Bakhtiari region south-east of Isfahan in Iran. The central ground is dominated by the design of five cypress trees, representing the tree-of-life. The centre tree replaces the more usual medallion of other carpets. The elongated cartouches of the borders are typical of classical Northwest Persian carpets. The original carpet bears the date 1291 AH (AD 1874) woven into the border.
